El Tri and Reggae Boyz are in a group that includes Ecuador and Venezuela, which are neither strong teams nor qualifiers, and the group winner will get a quarter-final match with the second-placed team in Argentina's Group A (Canada, Chile, and Peru).
And so these familiar foes head into this tournament knowing the stakes are high and there will be few surprises around the field.

It has been a year since their last meeting, when Mexico beat Jamaica in the semi-finals of the 2023 Gold Cup. Before that, two draws were played in the CONCACAF Nations League.
Leon Bailey and Michail Antonio lead the Jamaican attack, hoping to find a way to penetrate the Mexican back line, which was leaking goals, albeit in the face of strong competition.
Mexico's last five matches have included three multi-goal defeats: 2-0 to USA, 4-0 to Uruguay, and a 3-2 defeat to Brazil. There are also victories over Panama and Bolivia.
Jamaica has won three in a row, beating Panama 1-0, and has also beaten Dominica and the Dominican Republic in World Cup qualifiers.

Mexico national team news, focus
El Tri's midfield will demand a lot from Mexico, with Edson Alvarez leading a side that includes nine players with between 27 and 78 caps. Santiago Jiménez leads an attacking group that has failed to make a good impression in the national team shirt, while the two defenses are good but must be very good against a goalkeeping team with nine international matches distributed among three players. Ochoa's memo may be greatly missed.
Jamaica team news, focus
We know Jamaica can score, but can you prevent any team in this group from scoring more? Andre Blake leads the way in goal but there are big questions at the back, with Luton's Amari Bale, Charlton's Michael Hector and Brentford's Ethan Pinnock leading an improved but still uncertain group of defenders.
Predictions for the match between Mexico and Jamaica
Objectives! Mexico may be looking to get the better of their rival, and Jamaica will certainly feel this is their best path to three points. Billy and Antonio will have their moments but Blake will be tested again and again in a way too much for a human. Mexico 3-2 Jamaica.
